Singing Together for Unity and Diversity

Cantar Community Choir is a non-profit community-based choir located in York, United Kingdom, and was founded in 2015. The choir offers a wonderful singing experience for its diverse membership of around 50 singers of all ages in a friendly and welcoming environment. Our repertoire includes classical, popular, folk, gospel, and jazz music, all sung in four to eight part harmony, as well as international contemporary music influenced by folk, gospel, and jazz traditions. Cantar Community Choir meets once a week at The Priory Street Centre and hosts events throughout the year, including performances at various community, charity, arts, and music events. The choir is known for being a non-auditioning choir, making it accessible to all local residents.

Meet Our Musical Director

Bethan Kelly
Musical Director

Bethan holds a BA in Music from the University of York, earned in 2023. Her university experience enriched her with involvement in diverse musical groups and community initiatives, fostering a deep appreciation for music's uplifting role in daily life. Bethan aspires to extend this joy through her work in community music and education across Yorkshire. Post-2021, she also co-led "That Sounds Fun," a social media endeavor celebrating music and singing. Her leadership marks a promising new chapter for Cantar, driven by her passion for sharing music's joy.
