Vacancy - Assistant Musical Director/Accompanist

A New Accompanist and Assistant Musical Director for ‘Cantar’ Community Choir, York.

Who Are We?

Formed in January 2015 by a group of friends. Led by Director Katie Privett for two years. Performed in venues across York, including the National Centre for Early Music and Jack Lyons Concert Hall, University of York. Now a 60 strong, well balanced, non-auditioning Community Choir with a widening repertoire and loyal membership.

We are looking for:

A committed, friendly and talented person to take the place of Sarah, current Assistant Director and Accompanist when she leaves us at Easter 2019.

‘Cantar’ has established itself as a hugely friendly and welcoming community choir over the last four years. We enjoy rehearsing and performing in equal measure. Our repertoire is growing steadily and our members are encouraged by Katie’s enthusiastic and sympathetic teaching.

We are now looking to begin a new ‘chapter’ in our development by appointing our second assistant director of music.

What we do:

‘Cantar’ is a non-profit making choir that performs for enjoyment and aims to provide pleasure to audiences in the York area. Profits from events are shared between two charities nominated by our members each year.

Rehearsals are held on Monday evenings in The Priory Street Centre, York from 7.30 until 9.30 pm. At present we rehearse for around 44 weeks a year. Performances are given both in and out of doors.

We perform both accompanied and acapella works.

Our Existing Team:

Katie Privett , our Musical Director since February 2017, has developed her skills whilst leading a number of choral groups at the University of York, including the York Glee Singers and Revelation Rock Gospel Choir. She has continued to develop and explore her long-standing passion for ensemble singing alongside a career in environmental sustainability.

She recently attended workshops with the Kings Singers’ as she looks to develop her career as an MD. Katie has led Cantar in successful concerts in 2017 including the sharing of the platform with the nationally regarded Ian MacMillan, the Bard of Barnsley at Christmas.

Joe Christie is our second pianist and also sings with the choir. Joe recently completed his Master’s degree in Community Music at the University of York.

The new Assistant Director/Accompanist will complete this team of three and be asked to make full use of their talents and skills.

Our Repertoire:

‘Cantar’ enjoys singing a variety of musical genre, taking compositions from around the globe which are both traditional and contemporary. Our developing core repertoire includes classical songs both church and secular from all eras, and popular music of stage and screen, sung, generally, in four to eight-part harmony. We aim to extend this range to include more international contemporary music which uses folk and jazz traditions as influences.

Working with our Community Choir:

We have established a democratic process through which all members of the choir are able to contribute to major decisions that affect us. Our mantra is that the views of every member are equally important. The choir committee is elected annually and lead and manage the essential tasks such as concert and social organisation. Funds are managed very effectively with accounts offered at each Annual General Meeting. We ask our team to act in partnership with committee members to ensure the choir enjoys developing success in selected performances over the year.

Our Annual Programme:

‘Cantar’ performs an annual Winter Concert every December and sing carols outdoors during the York Christmas Street Festival. We are looking forward to performing alongside Ian Mac Millan again in December this year. We also perform a major concert in late Spring or early Summer.

‘Cantar’ also responds to requests by groups and charity organisations and sing at their events or fundraisers. Our next Concert takes place on Saturday 4th May when we join with the Radcliffe on Trent Ladies Choir to perform at St Michael le Belfrey Church, York. Our major summer concert takes place on Friday 5th July at the Temple Hall of St John’s University, York. Another joint concert, we are playing host to the Bloemfontein Children’s Choir from South Africa.

Our Vision for the Future:

The choir has the ambition to improve its performance skills and broaden its repertoire and so enhance its reputation. We are keen to enjoy new experiences and have begun to look at taking part in Musical Festivals and singing in other parts of the country. We do not necessarily see ourselves taking part in competitions though at this stage.
